Two Guangxi officials sacked over COVID-19 response

Two local officials in Beihai, South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, have been sacked for poor performance in handling the renewed COVID-19 upsurge.

An official notice Sunday said that Su Kuangfeng, deputy secretary of the Party Committee and district chief of Haicheng district, Beihai, and Tang Gang, Party secretary and director of the Municipal Health Committee were dismissed by the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Party Committee due to their failure to fulfill their duties in epidemic prevention and control.

Beihai has been hard hit by Omicron, recording 9 new local confirmed cases and 232 new local asymptomatic infections on Saturday. Driven by Omicron BA.2.3, cases in Beihai have surged, with a total of nine confirmed and 444 asymptomatic cases reported within six days since the first case was discovered on Tuesday.
