According to officials, 131 people were affected by the accident, with one person killed and 41 slightly injured.

The accident occurred at 6:15 am local time (0515 GMT) as a train on Line R4 between Manresa and Sant Vicenc de Calders at the height of Vacarisses veered off the tracks.

The accident took place between the towns of Terrassa and Manresa, located in the industrial belt surrounding the outskirts of Barcelona.

Those injured are being treated by emergency medical services and some are being taken to hospitals in the area, the country's railway operator Renfe said, while it was confirmed two hours after the accident that no one was trapped inside the wagons.

The train is part of the network of commuter trains in Catalonia that are mainly used to take people to work.

Heavy rains in Catalonia last week have caused landslides and flooding, although the regional government deactivated the meteorological warning on Monday afternoon due to an "improvement of conditions."

"The landslide has caused the derailment of four of the six wagons that formed this train," Renfe said.

Spain suffered one of the most deadly train accidents in Europe in July 2014, when a train carrying 222 passengers derailed in Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain and killed 80 people.
