NEW DELHI, June 21 (Xinhua) -- At least 12 people were killed and six others injured on Thursday after a sand-laden tractor hit a passenger car in central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, police said.
The accident took place in Morena district, about 450 km north of Bhopal, the capital city of Madhya Pradesh.
"Early this morning a sand-laden truck hit a jeep carrying passengers here, resulting in death of 12 people and injuring six others," a police official said. "The injured were taken to a hospital."
Following the accident, locals and police carried out the rescue work, eyewitnesses said.
Police have registered a case and ordered investigations into the accident.
"We are trying to ascertain what caused the accident," the police official said.
Deadly road accidents are common in India often caused by overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.
Officials say on an average over 400 deaths take place every day in India due to road accidents.
