Paris (People's Daily) -- The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in France reached 22,300 on Tuesday with 2,444 new cases in 24 hours.

This included 1,100 deaths and 2,516 people in a serious condition, Jerome Salomon, the director of France's public health agency, announced in a daily press conference.

The French media also reported that the military field hospital set up by the French army began operations on Tuesday.

This hospital is seeking to take the pressure off intensive care units in an eastern region badly hit by COVID-19.

The French government has tightened restrictions even further. From Tuesday, the public will only be able to exercise alone or with their children once a day, for no more than an hour, and within a kilometer of their home.

Open-air markets would also be closed, announced French Prime Minister Édouard Philippe on Monday evening.
