MEHTARLAM, Afghanistan, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- Four commuters have lost their lives and 15 others were injured following a deadly road accident in Afghanistan's eastern Laghman province, an official said Sunday.

The incident occurred when two vans collided head-on with each other in Qarghayi district's Uryakhil area of the province along Kabul-Jalalabad main road late on Saturday, resulting in four passengers' death including two women and 15 others including 12 children injured, Asadullah Daulatzai, provincial government spokesman, told Xinhua.

The injured, some in critical condition, have been shifted to a nearby hospital, said the spokesman who partly blamed recklessness from drivers for the incident.

Earlier this week, a similar accident reportedly took lives of 11 people and injured as many others in the Qarghayi.

Up to 692 people have been killed and over 39,600 others injured as a result of over 7,690 traffic incidents countrywide in 2019, according to the Disasters Management System of the Afghan Ministry of Public Health.
