NEW DELHI, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- At least four people were killed as severe cyclonic storm Mandous Saturday triggered heavy rains and winds, resulting in waterlogging and uprooting of trees in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, officials said.

"Four people have lost their lives. 181 huts were damaged due to the cyclone. 400 trees were uprooted in Chennai due to the cyclone," Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin told media.

Stalin visited the affected areas and distributed flood relief materials and food among the affected people in the Kasimedu area of Chennai.

The cyclone made landfall late Friday night, crossing the coast in Tamil Nadu with a wind speed of 75 km per hour.

The cyclone has now weakened into a deep depression.

"It is very likely to move nearly west northwestwards and gradually weaken into a depression by today noon," the India Meteorological Department said.
