BEIJING, May 14 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7 jolted Southeast of Easter Island around 23:55 on Wednesday (0555 GMT on Thursday), the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The epicenter, with a depth of 10.0 km, was initially determined to be at 35.7934 degrees south latitude and 102.8879 degrees west longitude.

Easter Island, known for its giant stone-carved heads facing out to sea, is located at the southernmost point of the Polynesian Triangle in the South Pacific, and is considered one of the world's remotest inhabited regions.
