About 75 Taliban rebels renounced violence and surrendered to the government in Afghanistan's eastern province of Nangarhar on Wednesday, the provincial government said.

"Up to 75 Taliban militants denounced the hostility and joined the peace and reconciliation process and laid down their arms in Bati Kot district," the government said in a statement.

They also handed over 75 guns to the security officials in the district, southeast of the provincial capital Jalalabad city.

With the insurgents' surrender, peace and stability would be further strengthened in parts of the province, 120 km east of the Afghan capital of Kabul, the statement added.

Taliban militants fighting the government have not made any comment on the report.
