TALUQAN, Afghanistan, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- About 30 Taliban militants were killed in an airstrike in Afghanistan's northern Takhar province Tuesday night, a local source said Wednesday.

"The strike was conducted acting on a specific intelligence input on outskirts of Khwaja Bahawuddin district. Some 30 militants were also wounded by the strike," Abdul Khalil Khalili from Afghan army Corps 217 Pamir told Xinhua.

Armed with small firearms and rocket propelled grenades (RPGs), the targeted militants tried to launch a massive attack on the district center, he said.

Three hijacked military vehicles were also destroyed by the strike, Khalili added, without saying whether the strike was conducted by Afghan Air Force or NATO-led coalition forces.

The province has been the scene of heavy clashes since early this month. On Tuesday, Taliban militants overran and captured control of neighboring Yangi Qala and Darqad districts after heavy clashes with security forces.

The Taliban insurgent group, which has been waging an insurgency of more than 18 years, has not made a comment yet.
