Washington (People’s Daily) -- A powerful storm system produced at least two tornadoes that struck central Tennessee early on Tuesday morning, killing at least 22 people.

Images shared on social media showed downed power lines, collapsed homes and businesses and debris strewn across streets.

Local officials warned residents to stay off the roads as emergency crews assessed the damage.

President Trump said he plans to visit Tennessee on Friday, and said his team is already working with state officials.

He began his remarks at the National Association of Counties Legislative Conference today by sending “warm wishes to the great people in Tennessee” in the wake of the “horrible, very vicious tornado."

The extreme weather came on Super Tuesday, when Tennessee is one of 14 states holding primaries.

Voting will still take place, but some polling locations in affected counties, including Putnam, Wilson and Davidson, home to Nashville, were closed or their opening was delayed, according to Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett.

His office, as well as the Tennessee Democratic Party, were directing voters to alternate locations.

The state has deployed generators to some polling stations without power.
