Brazil expects grain harvest of 272.3 mln tons

BRASILIA, March 11 (Xinhua) -- Brazil's state-owned National Supply Company (Conab) on Thursday said it expects 6 percent growth in the 2020/21 grain harvest, for a total of 272.3 million tons, 15.4 million tons more than in 2019/20 season.

A Conab report showed cultivated area is estimated to grow 3.6 percent compared to the previous harvest, for a total of 68.3 million hectares.

Soybean, Brazil's main agricultural export product, may see 4.1 percent growth in output compared to the previous cycle, to reach 135.1 million tons.

Soybean exports are estimated to reach a record 86.1 million tons, or 3.7 percent more compared to last year.

Corn is also expected to see record output, of over 108 million tons, or 5.4 percent more than the last harvest.

Corn exports should reach 35 million tons, practically the same as last year.

Rice and cotton are both expected to see a drop in production, of 1.9 percent and 14.5 percent, respectively.
