SAO PAULO, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- Brazil registered 70,574 new COVID-19 cases in the past day, raising the national count to 7,040,608, the country's Ministry of Health said on Wednesday.

The nationwide COVID-19 death toll rose to 183,735 after 936 more deaths were reported in the last 24 hours, said the ministry.

Brazil's government launched a campaign on Wednesday to raise awareness about the importance of getting vaccinated against COVID-19.

The Latin American nation has the world's second highest COVID-19 death toll, behind only the United States, and the third largest caseload, surpassed only by the United States and India. Enditem
