RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- Brazilian presidential candidate, Jair Bolsonaro, who was stabbed a week ago, is recuperating after overnight emergency surgery, said medical sources on Thursday.

According to the medical team that are attending to the Social Liberal Party candidate at the Albert Einstein Israelite Hospital in Sao Paolo, the surgery lasted two hours.

The abdominal surgery was successfully carried out in a routine manner, said the medical team, adding that, "the patient progressed well after surgery, without problems, and is now in the Intensive Care Unit."

Bolsonaro, who currently leads most opinion polls for the election on Oct. 7, underwent surgery on Wednesday night after experiencing abdominal pain throughout the day.

The candidate had been transferred to the current hospital on Sept. 7, one day after being stabbed in the abdomen at a campaign rally in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais.

The attack injured Bolsonaro's large and small intestines, requiring a first emergency surgery the same day.

He was taken off intravenous feeding and moved onto a light diet on Tuesday but on Wednesday again began to complain of abdominal pain.
