LONDON, March 30 (Xinhua) -- A British soldier was killed on Thursday in a roadside bomb blast in Syria, the British Ministry of Defense (MOD) confirmed on Friday.

A MOD spokesperson said: "It is with regret that we must confirm that a member of the UK Armed Forces was killed by an improvised explosive device in Syria yesterday."

"The individual was embedded with U.S. forces on a counter-Daesh operation when the incident occurred," the spokesperson said, referring to the Islamic State.

"The family has been notified and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time," the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson gave no information about the relevant service branch, unit or gender. "We cannot confirm any further details at this stage," the spokesperson added.

The roadside bomb killed two coalition personnel, the other being an American, and wounded five others, it was reported.

Britain joined the U.S.-led coalition in Syria in 2014, in the name of defeating the Islamic State.
