PHNOM PENH, May 12 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia's Ministry of Health (MoH) on Wednesday reported a daily record of 472 new COVID-19 cases, pushing the national case tally to 20,695 since the pandemic began in January last year.

The new infections included 469 local cases and three imported cases, the MoH said in a statement.

Five more fatalities had been confirmed, raising the death toll to 136, it said, adding that 369 patients had recovered, taking the total number of recoveries to 8,539.

Cambodia has been enduring the third wave of COVID-19 community transmission since Feb. 20. In a bid to curb the virus spread, the country has closed down all schools, sports facilities, museums, cinemas, and entertainment venues nationwide and has also imposed lockdowns in some high-risk areas of infections.

MoH's secretary of state and spokeswoman Or Vandine reiterated that COVID-19 vaccines, along with other preventive measures, would save lives from the COVID-19.

"More than 1.8 million people in Cambodia have been vaccinated already as of May 11, 2021," she said in a tweet.

The Southeast Asian nation launched an anti-COVID-19 inoculation drive on Feb. 10 after having received vaccines from China and the World Health Organization's COVAX Facility.

The kingdom is targeting to inoculate at least 10 million out of its 16-million population.
