Beijing (People's Daily app) - Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that he hopes to increase the number of followers on his Sino Weibo account in a visit to the Sina Weibo headquarters in Beijing on Monday.

Trudeau began his four-day state visit to China with the first trip to the country's most popular social media company, Sina said.

“I have a decent number on Weibo, but I'm hoping to increase that significantly today,” said Trudeau jokingly in his speech, according to online videos.

Trudeau opened his Sina Weibo account in 2013 and has more than 14,000 followers and made more than 1,800 posts on it.

His visit to China is also expected to launch the 2018 China-Canada Year of Tourism.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang met with Trudeau later on Monday, focusing on trading between the two countries, AP reported.

China and Canada are in exploratory talks on a framework for a trade agreement and Canada has been pushing for provisions on the environment, governance, labor and gender issues, AP reported.
