China and El Salvador formally established diplomatic relations on Tuesday.

Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and El Salvador Foreign Affairs Minister Carlos Castaneda signed the Joint Communique on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of El Salvador.

Castaneda said the government of the Republic of El Salvador recognizes that there is only one China in the world, and that the government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing China. He said Taiwan is an inalienable part of the Chinese territory.

The government of the Republic of El Salvador immediately cut off its “diplomatic relations” with Taiwan and promised not to have any official relations with Taiwan and or conduct any official exchanges, he added.

In response, Wang said the government of the People’s Republic of China appreciates the position of the government of the Republic of El Salvador.
