China firmly opposes the United States House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's planned visit to Taiwan and has made solemn representations to the US, China said on Thursday.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Zhao Lijian made the remarks at a daily press briefing in Beijing in response to Pelosi's scheduled visit to Taiwan on Sunday, which would be the first visit to Taiwan by a US House Speaker in 25 years.

"If Pelosi visits Taiwan, it will seriously violate the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques, seriously damage China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, seriously undermine the political foundation of the China-US relations and send a seriously wrong signal to the separatist forces for 'Taiwan independence'," Zhao said.

Zhao pointed out that the US should abide by the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques, immediately cancel Pelosi's planned visit to Taiwan, stop official US-Taiwan contacts and take practical action to fulfill the US commitment not to support "Taiwan independence".

"If the US does not cancel Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, China will take firm and forceful measures to safeguard our national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and the US side must be fully responsible for all the consequences," Zhao said.
