China will continue to make efforts to safeguard the Iran nuclear deal, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said on Monday.

Hua Chunying was responding to a question on the ministerial meeting on Iran's nuclear program in Vienna on July 6.

The meeting is the first since US President Donald Trump withdrew the US from the Iran nuclear deal in May. A joint statement made by all parties involved in the meeting called for the survival of the deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi attended the meeting and put forward China’s five propositions, including that countries should obey international rules and show faith and responsibility.

The most important achievement of the meeting is that Iran will continue to stay in the deal and other signatories agree to safeguard it, Hua added.

The meeting confirmed that the UK, together with China, would take over as co-chairs of the Arak research reactor working group after the US' withdrawal.
