Chinese ambassador leads delegation at Sweden's political week

Stockholm (People's Daily) - Every July, Sweden’s most distinguished decision-makers and leaders gather on Gotland Island for Almedalen Week, currently underway and running through July 8.  China’s ambassador to Sweden, Gui Congyou, is at the event, leading a delegation advocating new diplomatic ideals, and so far has made great achievements. 

Throughout the week, Swedish politicians along with representatives from NGO’s, tech companies and the local community will take part in seminars, debates, and various social activities.

This year marked the event’s 50th anniversary. In what started out as a small political forum has since become an important large-scale and comprehensive gathering for Sweden where 4,250 programs are offered during the week long event.

This year, the forum comes just two months before Sweden’s national election. Debates between the Swedish parties so far have been sharper more than ever, as visitor attendance has already reached 45,000, according to some estimates.

Ambassador Gui has met many people from various parts of Sweden, furthering relations with the country’s politicians. The ambassador has also participated in several interviews with journalists and hosts in Swedish media, while advocating China’s diplomatic ideals.

During a recent live televised interview with Dagens Industri, Ambassador Gui reiterated firmly the Chinese position on issues ranging from a trade war to AI and foreign investment. When faced with sharp questions from the host, he offered responses that showcased his sharp sense of humor winning over Swedish audiences throughout the Scandinavian nation.
