As the summer holiday inches closer, a number of Chinese tourists including students and their families and school staff will mark their holidays with travel overseas, and the US remains a top destination despite an increasing number of gun-related violence.

The Chinese Embassy in Washington released a notice to alert Chinese citizens heading to the US, especially students and their parents, to stay vigilant and cautious.

“The US is not stable in terms of public security with a high occurrence of gun violence, robbery and theft. Tourists should stay vigilant against suspicious persons and avoid going out alone at night,” said the notice released last week, which also warns Chinese citizens to stay calm and call 911 in a dangerous situation.

In order to prevent terrorism, the US Customs has reinforced security checks at airports. The embassy reminded Chinese citizens to pay close attention to news reports and respect law enforcement activities and follow the instructions of airport personnel.

“The enforcement of US Customs personnel is not bound by the fourth amendment of the US Constitution, and they are entitled to check passports and paraphernalia including suitcases, electronic equipment and vehicles of people trying to pass US borders without a permit,” said the notice.
