Two male penguins trusted with the care of a fostered penguin egg have welcomed a tiny sub-Antarctic Gentoo chick into the world, Sydney's Sea Life Aquarium said on Friday (October 26).

The doting dads, Magic and Sphen, made headlines around the world this month when aquarium staff gave them an egg to look after following a successful trial with a dummy egg.The chick, weighing just 91 grams (3.21 oz), was born on the evening of October 19, with the aquarium announcing the birth one week later on Friday.

The yet-to-be-named chick is the first sub-Antarctic penguin to be born at the Sydney aquarium.Magic and Sphen had kept the egg on small nesting rings built from pebbles and shared duties, with one penguin patrolling the nest for potential threats while the other kept the egg warm.
