JAKARTA, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- The number of people died in floods in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta and its peripheral areas has jumped to 19, the government said on Thursday.

"It has been confirmed that 19 people died, but two others are still to be confirmed," Indonesian Social Affairs Minister Juliari Peter Batubara told reporters in Jakarta.

The deaths were caused by drowning, hypothermia, landslides and electrocution, according to the data from the Indonesian Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).

The agency's spokesman Agus Wibowo has said the number of victims "is likely to rise."

Heavy rains hitting Greater Jakarta since New Year's Eve have had some parts of the region submerged and nearly 30,000 people displaced.

At least 120,000 officers have been deployed in Jakarta to respond to the natural disaster.

Jakarta is home to more than 10 million people, and some 30 million people living in its surrounding areas.
