WASHINGTON, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- Dozens of U.S. mayors announced on Wednesday their endorsements of Pete Buttigieg, mayor of South Bend, Indiana, and a Democratic presidential candidate, for his presidential campaign.

Fifty-eight current and former mayors wrote in a USA Today op-ed that they want "a great mayor in the White House."

"We endorse him from heartland towns, coastal cities, suburban communities, and every other corner of our great country," wrote the mayors.

Buttigieg tweeted on Wednesday that he is proud to have the support, adding that "mayors know better than anyone why we need a new approach to politics -- one that focuses on the everyday and puts community over partisan ideology."

As a veteran deployed to Afghanistan in 2014, Buttigieg launched his presidential campaign in April.

According to a newly-released national NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, Buttigieg, 37, got support from 7 percent of Democratic primary supporters, falling far behind former Vice President Joe Biden, Senator Elizabeth Warren, and Senator Bernie Sanders.
