Cairo (People’s Daily) – Egypt’s Ministry of Health and Population issued a statement on Friday confirming the first coronavirus case for the country and the first on the African continent.  In infected patient was reportedly a foreigner, but further details were not provided.

Ministry of Health spokesperson Khalid Mujahid said the patient tested positive for Covid-19 but had yet to reveal symptoms associated with the virus.

The patient was quarantined where he remains in stable condition while undergoing treatment.  The patient’s close contacts will also be subject to 14 days of isolated observation.

Egyptian officials reported the case to the World Health Organization and the country has since implemented necessary measures to prevent the virus from spreading, Khalid said.
