RAMALLAH/GAZA, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- At least five Palestinians were killed and 13 were injured early on Monday during an Israeli army raid on the West Bank town of Jericho, Palestinian and Israeli sources said.

Israeli media outlets reported that an Israeli army statement said that its forces raided the Aqbat Jabr refugee camp close to Jericho to uncover a cell of Palestinian militants that attempted a shooting attack on a restaurant last week.

On Monday morning, several Palestinian military groups warned that "the Israeli occupation will pay the price" and called on the Palestinians in the West Bank and Jerusalem "to resist the Israeli raids."

Palestinian eyewitnesses said that an Israeli army force stormed the refugee camp overnight to arrest Palestinians wanted by Israel who were involved in carrying out shooting attacks against Israel.

The eyewitnesses said Israeli soldiers killed around seven Palestinians and injured more than 13.

They added that the killed were members of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) armed wing and that the Israeli army forces held their bodies and did not hand them over to the Palestinian side.

Tensions have mounted across the Palestinian territories following an Israeli military operation in the West Bank city of Jenin last week that left 10 Palestinians dead.
