ISLAMABAD, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- At least 14 people were killed and several others injured on Saturday after a mini-truck crashed amid dense fog in Pakistan's eastern Punjab province, rescue officials said.

The accident occurred in Sargodha district, where visibility was extremely low due to heavy fog. The truck veered off the road and fell into a dry canal, the Rescue 1122 said in a statement.

Seven people died on the spot, while the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals. Another seven later succumbed to their injuries during treatment, taking the death toll to 14, the statement added.

The rescue organization said that the driver had opted for a local route after the motorway was closed due to foggy conditions.

Rescue teams arrived at the site soon after receiving the information and launched relief operations. The bodies of the deceased and the injured were shifted to a nearby hospital.

Women and children were among the victims. Rescue officials confirmed that all those killed and injured were residents of Islamabad.
