Iranian lawmakers on Sunday strongly condemned a recent "meddlesome" anti-Iran resolution adopted by the European Parliament.

In the resolution adopted on Thursday, the European Parliament accused the Iranian government of violating human rights during the recent unrest in the country, and called for the designation of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization.

The Iranian lawmakers described in a statement the resolution as a "clear instance of intervention" in Iran's internal affairs, adding that the resolution's adoption was aimed at covering up the European Parliament's failure to address the European Union's internal problems.

The statement noted that there were reliable evidence proving that the "terrorist" groups that incited the riots in Iran were in "direct and organized" contact with certain countries' intelligence services, which led and supported the killing of Iranians in the unrest.

The Iranian lawmakers emphasized that the European Parliament and "meddlesome" European governments bore direct legal and political responsibility for supporting and facilitating "terrorist" actions against Iran and must be held accountable.

The statement added that the European Parliament's designation of the IRGC, "which has played the most significant role in fighting terrorism in the West Asia region," as a terror organization was an "unjust accusation."

Protests erupted since late December in several Iranian cities over the sharp depreciation of the rial. Initially peaceful, the protests gradually escalated into violence, leading to casualties and damage to public property, mosques, government buildings and banks, for which Tehran has blamed the United States and Israel.
