TUNIS, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Tunisian President Kais Saied has announced to extend the state of emergency across the country till the end of 2026.
The state of emergency in the entire country "will be extended from Jan. 31 to Dec. 31, 2026," said the Official Gazette of the Tunisian Republic (JORT), in a decree dated Jan. 30.
Tunisian emergency law grants the authorities exceptional powers, including carrying out home arrests, banning official meetings, imposing curfews, monitoring media and press, prohibiting assemblies, and media censorship without permission from the judiciary.
The state of emergency in Tunisia was first declared on Nov. 24, 2015, following a bomb attack on a bus of the presidential guards, which killed 12 agents. It has remained in effect continuously for over a decade through repeated extensions.
