BANGKOK, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- Thai Army spokesman Winthai Suvaree announced that a Thai border patrol was fired upon by Cambodian forces Tuesday morning while conducting a routine patrol in the border area of Sisaket Province.

Cambodian troops launched one 40 mm grenade near the Thai patrol position, but no Thai personnel were injured in the incident, the spokesman said.

According to Winthai, following the attack, Thai forces returned fire in the direction of the origin using an M79 grenade launcher in accordance with rules of engagement, as a warning and self-defense measure to ensure the safety of personnel and the area under responsibility.

Preliminary assessment by the Thai side suggests the incident may be linked to a troop rotation on the Cambodian side. The newly deployed unit was unfamiliar with relevant regulations and command procedures, resulting in operational errors in the field, the army spokesman said.

Meanwhile, Cambodian Ministry of National Defense Spokesperson Maly Socheata denied the allegation in a press release.

She said following reports of explosions and gunfire on the Thai side, liaison teams from the two sides promptly established contact to discuss the matter.

"During this communication, Cambodian officials explicitly informed their Thai counterparts that Cambodian forces did not fire any weapons as alleged," Socheata said.

Also on Tuesday, Cambodia's State Secretariat of Border Affairs said that it had once again proposed to Thailand to dispatch a joint survey team to resume the work of border demarcation at some segments.
