JAKARTA, March 9 (Xinhua) -- Four people were killed after a large garbage mound collapsed at the Bantar Gebang Integrated Waste Processing Site in Bekasi, on the outskirts of Indonesia's Jakarta, the Ministry of Environment said on Monday.

The landslide occurred at around 14:30 local time on Sunday in Zone IV of the Bantar Gebang landfill, when a 50-meter-high pile of waste collapsed, according to a press release from the ministry.

Authorities confirmed that four victims were found dead in this incident.

Indonesia's Minister of Environment Hanif Faisol Nurofiq said the tragedy highlighted serious problems in Jakarta's waste management system.

He warned that the continued use of the open dumping method at the landfill poses risks to both residents and workers, and called for improvements in waste management practices.

The ministry has launched a comprehensive investigation into the incident and pledged strict law enforcement to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
