The United States Central Command on Friday launched bombing raids on military targets on Iran's Kharg Island, the country's key oil export hub, US President Donald Trump said. He threatened to target the island's oil infrastructure if Iran continues to blockade the Strait of Hormuz.
The US strike "totally obliterated every MILITARY target" on Kharg Island, Trump wrote on Truth Social. He said he had decided not to target the oil infrastructure on the island but threatened to "immediately reconsider this decision" if "Iran or anyone else" interferes with the passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
Located in the northwestern part of the Persian Gulf, Kharg Island is less than 500 kilometers northwest of the Strait of Hormuz and serves as Iran's largest oil export hub, handling 90% of the country's oil shipments.
Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned on Thursday that any attack on Iranian islands will "shatter all restraint."
"We will abandon all restraint and make the Persian Gulf run with the blood of invaders," Ghalibaf wrote on X. "The blood of American soldiers is Trump's personal responsibility."
Any attempt to capture Kharg Island would require a substantial number of ground troops, CNN reported, citing experts.
The Trump administration has yet to fully commit to sending boots on the ground, despite reports suggesting additional US troops and military assets are en route to the Middle East.
The Pentagon is reportedly deploying the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli and about 2,500 Marines to the Middle East. The forces are expected to take one to two weeks to join other US military assets already in the region.
Axios reported that the deployment would also include several warships and F-35 fighter jets to reinforce forces already in the area.
