NEW DELHI, March 19 (Xinhua) -- At least two people were killed and 11 others injured Thursday in a devastating fire that gutted a textile embroidery factory in the western Indian state of Gujarat, police said.

The fire broke out in Surat district, about 272 km south of Gandhinagar, the capital city of Gujarat.

"Thirteen labourers were rescued from the spot and rushed to SMIMER hospital," a police official said. "Of them, two were declared dead, and 11 others are undergoing treatment. Of the injured, the condition of some of the workers is stated to be critical."

Police and fire department officials said the fire was triggered by a short circuit and later aggravated by Liquefied Petroleum Gas cylinder explosions.

Authorities said immediately after receiving the distress call, the fire tenders were rushed to the spot to contain the blaze. It took more than three hours for the firefighters to bring the fire under control.
