JAKARTA, March 19 (Xinhua) -- A traffic jam stretching more than 30 kilometers on the road leading to Gilimanuk Port in Bali Island of Indonesia left one person dead and dozens of travelers fainting, local authorities confirmed on Thursday.

Local media reported that a long line of vehicles during the peak of the Eid al-Fitr homecoming exodus caused severe delays and health risks for travelers.

The victim was a 39-year-old housewife who was traveling on a bus from Denpasar to Central Java, said Bali Police official Nyoman Supartha Wiryadarma, adding that she reportedly lost consciousness while trapped in the gridlock and was rushed to a nearby community health center, but could not be saved.

"The tragic incident was allegedly caused by severe fatigue after the victim was stuck for hours in the prolonged traffic jam. The combination of extreme heat and uncertainty over waiting times is believed to have worsened conditions," said Wiryadarma in a written statement.

He also said at least 16 people fainted due to exhaustion and heat exposure while being trapped in the traffic, with medical teams deployed to assist the route.
