KABUL, April 6 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan's National Disaster Management Authority and the Danish Refugee Council have signed four agreements worth 1.5 million U.S. dollars to expand demining operations and mine-risk education across multiple provinces, the authority reported on Monday.

The deals, signed in Kabul, will fund specialized demining teams and public awareness campaigns in areas heavily contaminated by mines and unexploded ordnance in Kabul, Logar, Wardak, and Ghazni provinces, according to the authority's statement.

The programs will deliver mine-risk education to a total of 151,600 people affected by recent earthquakes and newly returned individuals in Kunar, Nangarhar, Nimroz and Kandahar provinces, it added. The demining teams will also carry out clearance of contaminated land.

In 2025, Afghanistan cleared explosive hazards from 58 square km of land, according to figures released by the authority in February, noting that more than 106,000 square km of Afghan territory remain contaminated with mines and unexploded ordnance.

War-ravaged Afghanistan is reportedly one of the most landmine-contaminated countries in the world, with dozens of people being killed or maimed every month.

The United Nations recently ranked the country third globally for casualties caused by landmines and unexploded ordnance.
