TOKYO, May 7 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks ended higher on Thursday, with the benchmark Nikkei stock index closing at a fresh record high above the 62,000 mark and registering its biggest single-day point gain of over 3,300.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 3,320.72 points, or 5.58 percent, from Friday to 62,833.84, off the record intraday high of 63,091.14.

The broader Topix index, meanwhile, finished 111.76 points, or 3 percent, higher at 3,840.49.

On the top-tier Prime Market, nonferrous metal, metal product and information and communication issues were notable gainers.

Following a 5-day public holiday in Japan, during which stock markets were closed from Monday through Wednesday, the Nikkei stock index jumped over 3 percent in the first 15 minutes of trading on Thursday, tracking overnight gains in U.S. counterparts as reports of a potential agreement to end the Middle East conflict sent oil prices tumbling.

A rise in heavyweight technology shares also lifted the market following advances on the U.S. tech-heavy Nasdaq index.

The Nikkei extended its gains in the afternoon, hitting a fresh intraday record high of 63,091.14 and topping the 63,000 threshold for the first time, as artificial intelligence and semiconductor-related shares remained firm.
