The freed prisoners, who were held on various charges, crossed into Afghanistan through the Spin Boldak border crossing in southern Kandahar province and the Torkham crossing in eastern Nangarhar province, according to the Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation.

An estimated six million Afghans remain abroad, the vast majority in neighboring Pakistan and Iran. Both countries have intensified pressure on undocumented foreign nationals to return to their homes.
