YANGON, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar hosted the Mekong Tourism Forum 2026 in Yangon on Wednesday, bringing together tourism officials, industry representatives and stakeholders from the six Greater Mekong Subregion countries.

In his opening remarks, U Maung Myint, Union Minister for Hotels, Tourism and Culture, said the forum continues to strengthen cooperation, inspire innovation and advance a shared vision for a more sustainable and inclusive tourism future in the Mekong region.

He said this year's theme, "Tourism for People, Travel with Purpose," highlights the importance of placing people at the center of tourism development by empowering communities, preserving cultural heritage, supporting livelihoods and encouraging more responsible travel.

The minister noted that the forum serves as a platform for exchanging ideas, practical experiences and forward-looking solutions in areas such as destination marketing, community empowerment, cultural creativity and responsible tourism development.

Director General of the Directorate of Hotels and Tourism U Aung Aye Han said tourism should benefit all sectors of society, including business owners, micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises, tour guides, hospitality workers and local communities.

As the host country, Myanmar also hopes the forum will provide international delegates with an opportunity to gain a better understanding of the country's current situation through firsthand experience, U Aung Aye Han said.
