Gunshots were heard on Monday afternoon in the city of Stade in the state of Lower Saxony in Germany, leading to five casualties, according to media reports.

A German police spokesperson was quoted as saying that two suspects have been caught. The incident took place in downtown Stade. All of the deceased were adults, and several others were injured, according to German media outlet BILD.

German media outlet FOCUS reported that witnesses saw a man and a woman attempting to flee by car. Police pursued the vehicle and tried to stop it by opening fire.

The police are still investigating. The suspects' motivation remains unclear.
