CAIRO, July 9 (Xinhua) -- Five members of the same family were killed in an apartment fire caused by a gas leak in Giza province, west of the Egyptian capital Cairo, state-run Al-Ahram news website reported on Thursday.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the leak ignited a blaze inside a seventh-floor apartment in the Omraniya district, killing a grandmother, her daughter, and three grandchildren, the report said.

The grandmother was found dead inside the burned apartment, while her daughter and three children died after jumping from the seventh floor in an attempt to escape the flames, according to initial inspections.

Civil protection forces and ambulances rushed to the scene following an emergency report, and the fire was brought under control, the media added.

The bodies were transferred to a hospital, and prosecutors have opened an investigation into the incident.
