Nine people have died in the building collapse in the western Indian state of Maharashtra after a huge mountain-like pile of waste came crashing onto it, officials said Monday.
The three-storey building collapsed amid heavy rains on Wednesday at Moshi in Pimpri Chinchwad area of Pune district, about 139 km southeast of Mumbai, the capital city of Maharashtra.
"A total of 23 workers were trapped inside and around the building. Five managed to escape on their own. Nine workers were rescued alive and in the subsequent days, the nine bodies were recovered," an official said.
According to officials, the building housed the administrative office of a private company that was processing waste on behalf of the city's civic body.
Preliminary post-mortem findings revealed that the victims suffered extensive injuries after being crushed by heavy concrete debris and garbage following the collapse of the building, said an official.
