JAKARTA, July 15 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia's external debt rose to 444.4 billion U.S. dollars at the end of May 2026, up 2.1 percent year on year from the previous month, Bank Indonesia said Wednesday.

Ramdan Denny Prakoso, executive director of the central bank's communications department, said the increase was mainly driven by higher government external debt, which reached 217.3 billion dollars.

Private external debt stood at 195.9 billion dollars, down 0.1 percent from a year earlier.

"Indonesia's external debt structure remains healthy, supported by the implementation of prudent debt management principles," Ramdan said.

The central bank said nearly all government external debt was long-term debt and was used to finance productive sectors, including healthcare, education and infrastructure.

Private external debt was concentrated in the manufacturing, financial services and insurance, electricity and gas supply, and mining sectors.
