SYDNEY, July 16 (Xinhua) -- One man has died and another has been hospitalized with serious injuries following the latest in a string of crashes involving electric mobility devices in the Australian state of Queensland.
The Queensland Police Service (QPS) said on Thursday that an e-scooter and electric skateboard collided while traveling on a bicycle corridor in the suburb of Urangan, 240 km north of Brisbane, around 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
A 39-year-old man, the rider of the e-scooter, died at the scene and the 30-year-old man on the electric skateboard was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
It comes amid a spike in serious crashes involving e-mobility devices in Queensland.
Under new rules imposed by the state government on July 1, children younger than 16 are banned from riding e-mobility devices without adult supervision and devices are limited to a maximum speed of 12 km per hour on footpaths.
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported on Monday that a 17-year-old boy died and 22 people were injured in e-mobility device crashes in Queensland in the first 12 days since the new regulations came into effect.
From August, riders older than 16 will be required to hold at least a learner's driver permit and, as of February 2027, devices capable of traveling faster than 25 km per hour will be made illegal.
The changes were recommended by a state parliamentary inquiry that found that 12 people were killed and over 6,300 were injured in e-mobility-related incidents in Queensland in 2025.
