British Prime Minister Keir Starmer delivered his farewell speech at No. 10 Downing Street on Monday before heading to Buckingham Palace to formally tender his resignation to King Charles III, marking the beginning of a leadership transition.

Under the UK's constitutional procedures, once the King accepts Starmer's resignation, the newly elected Labour leader Andy Burnham will be invited to Buckingham Palace, where he will be appointed prime minister and asked to form a new government. Burnham is then expected to make his first address as prime minister outside Downing Street.

Starmer announced on June 22 that he would step down as leader of the Labour Party while remaining in office as prime minister until his successor was chosen.

On July 17, the Labour Party announced that Burnham had been elected as its new leader. Under the UK's parliamentary system, the leader of the party that commands a majority in the House of Commons automatically becomes prime minister, meaning no general election is required.

Starmer's resignation comes as Labour begins a new chapter under Burnham's leadership, with the incoming prime minister set to take charge of the government after receiving the King's appointment.
