ATHENS, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Two American tourists were injured in a knife attack at the entrance to the Acropolis archaeological site in Athens on Tuesday morning, police said.

The incident occurred at around 8:05 a.m. (0505 GMT), when a 60-year-old man attacked a Greek-American couple with a knife, according to Greek national broadcaster ERT. The woman suffered a minor hand injury, while the man sustained a more serious leg injury.

The couple received first aid at the scene before being taken to Red Cross Hospital in Athens.

Police detained the assailant, who has criminal records including a case involving insult charges and a 2019 arrest for illegally carrying a knife, local media reported.

The suspect had also come to the attention of prosecutors in connection with previous involuntary psychiatric hospitalization cases, ERT reported.
