AMMAN, July 25 (Xinhua) -- Jordan's Aqaba Marine Reserve has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) said Saturday.

The inscription was approved by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee during its 48th session in Busan, South Korea.

According to an ASEZA statement, the reserve was inscribed under UNESCO's natural criteria in recognition of its outstanding ecological processes, rich marine biodiversity, and its role in conserving threatened marine species and ecosystems.

Located at the northern tip of the Red Sea, the reserve is home to more than 150 species of hard corals, over 500 fish species, around 1,000 mollusk species, and numerous endemic, rare, and threatened marine species.

Its coral reefs are also among the world's most heat-resilient, underscoring the global significance of the Gulf of Aqaba's marine ecosystem, according to the statement.

Shadi Al Majali, chairman of ASEZA's Board of Commissioners, said the inscription reflects Jordan's commitment to protecting the reserve's outstanding universal value and preserving it for future generations.
