A magnitude-6.8 earthquake hit Kyushu, Japan, at a depth of 10 kilometers on Tuesday afternoon, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) measured the quake at magnitude 7.1, saying it struck Kumamoto Prefecture in southwestern Japan at 4:27 p.m. local time.

The JMA has issued a tsunami advisory for the coasts of the Ariake Sea and the Yatsushiro Sea.

It was followed by several aftershocks, and all train services, including the Kyushu Shinkansen, the West Kyushu Shinkansen, and local lines within the Kyushu region, have been suspended, Japanese media reported.
