PHNOM PENH, July 29 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia and Indonesia have pledged to strengthen cooperation in combating online scams, describing tech-based fraud as a complex global issue requiring international collaboration, said a press release issued Wednesday by Cambodia's Commission for Combating Online Scams (CCOS).

The commitment was made during a meeting in Phnom Penh on Tuesday afternoon between Cambodian Senior Minister Chhay Sinarith, head of the CCOS Secretariat, and visiting Indonesian Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Arif Havas Oegroseno.

Sinarith emphasized Cambodia's strong commitment to eradicating online scams, noting that to share experiences and discuss further countermeasures, Cambodia will host the International Conference on Combating Online Scams in Phnom Penh from Sept. 23 to 24.

For his part, Oegroseno praised Cambodia's crackdowns, noting that online scams form a global fraud ecosystem that requires collective action to dismantle.

Oegroseno added that Indonesia stands ready to support Cambodia by strengthening the capacity of law enforcement officials and boosting cross-border cooperation.

Cambodia has launched an unprecedented nationwide crackdown on cyber scam networks to ensure public safety and restore its international image.

According to a government statement issued last Friday, authorities shut down 737 online scam centers across the country, including 72 casinos, between June 2025 and June 2026. By June this year, a total of 21,102 foreigners of 38 nationalities had been deported in connection with these illicit operations.
