JAKARTA, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Eight people were killed and nine others injured after a drag racing car lost control and crashed into spectators during a motorsport event on Sunday in Kotamobagu city, North Sulawesi province, local police said Monday.
The crash occurred during the Tidar Drag Race Championship 2026, held on a public road without barriers or safety fencing separating the racing track from spectators.
Video footage circulating online showed a racing car swerving off the course about 300 meters from the starting line before hitting people standing nearby.
Local police said authorities are investigating the incident.
The crash has raised concerns over safety standards at amateur racing events held on public roads in Indonesia, where spectators are often positioned close to racing areas without adequate protection.
