LONDON, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- A container ship came under attack in the Gulf of Oman on Tuesday, prompting its crew to send distress calls and prepare to abandon ship, a seafarer told Xinhua.

The incident took place on the eastern fringe of the Gulf of Oman. Radio exchanges between ships identified the targeted vessel as container ship Vela Nova, carrying 17 crew members on board.

The ship was allegedly assaulted from a helicopter.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) issued an advisory at the same day, confirming an incident involving a container ship and military forces in the Gulf of Oman.

Shipping vessels have been advised to stay updated on maritime security alerts and keep a close watch on the shifting operational situation, the UKMTO said, adding that relevant authorities have been notified, with investigations underway.
